if u convert 1 us dollar u already got 15000 indonesia rupiah. that is why the price is high but still cheaper if convert to your original currency

Unknown said...

hello Anonymous, thank you for the comment, I actually used the latest conversion rates and thats a lot lower than 15000 so the prices are fairly accurate

Hi Luke,
I guess everything goes up nowadays, nothing goes down except rain :)
Take care.

Too true Umi, but it should make us choose carefully what we want and why. Thank you for visiting, nice to see you here again

Wow! I cannot afford to live in Indonesia. I would be homeless. The rent for an apartment is too high. Thanks for sharing these info.

Ria Tumimomor said...

That is why I am still living with my parents (shame on me!)

Unknown said...

I agree with Umi, prices of everything are going up nowadays.

Actually Jakarta is not so bad, for example there are apartments which are affordable for medium income citizens.

JP, Indonesia is becoming more expensive but actually there are many places and things that have not moved in price. Property is getting more expensive thats for sure.

Ria, No shame staying at home, best place to be.

Harry, Homes in the west are far cheaper than pretty much anywhere else in the city. I have just moved to a house in the south and whilst cheap has cost me a lot of money to improve. Blog to follow.

Thanks guys for the comments. Appreciate it.

Isn't the cost of housing a per year quote?

Nata said...

Hi Luke, where's your recomendation for 20.000.000 /year unfurnish apartment ? Is it 1 or 2 bedroom ? Thanks

Unknown said...

@ Unknown, the figures are from experience, speaking to agents, buying and renting and yes negotiating prices

@ Nata, Try Talem Palem, Mediterannia in Tomang, or Kalibata area but these figures are from earlier this year and things will have changed I am sure

Hey, I am looking to retire in Jakarta. If I want to bring my domestic helper from the Philippines to Jakarta how difficult would it be for me to get her in work visa?

Unknown said...

@Anonymous, I am sorry but I dont really know that much about visas. Click on the link on the left which says 'all you need to know about Indonesia' as the site that opens provides you with so much more information. Good luck

I'm going to Solo next month. How much money will I need to stay in Solo for 6 nights and Jakarta 2 nights? I will be there 8 nights total and 9 full days. Hotel, taxi, food, souvenirs, fun time. I don't want to spend crazily, but I do want to enjoy myself. My funds aren't unlimited by any means. I will be watching my budget somewhat. Thanks!

Unknown said...

@Chad, Thanks for the question but I really can't answer that. Still, I hope you have a good time

Thanks for your information. I think it is useful for me when i start working here next month.

Great blog Luke. The apartment cost is that average per month or per year? SUrely not 5k a month furnished...

Unknown said...

Hi Shaun, noope that is a rough yearly figure for the apartments, you can also get houses for pretty much the same price in some parts of the city as well

Greetings Luke!

I admit I have my eyebrow raised about Indonesia especially with the Tsunamis and the like, but find it a very beautiful place. Before I ask my questions, I want to thank you for posting this table because it gives me a better perspective on what I thought were pretty nice figures on a conversion app. My questions? 1. What areas do you think would be the safest to BUILD a house, and maybe with farm land? My husband, family, and I are considering moving there and would like some advice from people like yourself, who LIVE there and would know best. Also what are job opportunities like for Adult English teachers? As a former expat myself, I must say 'Congrats on staying by the way', because living overseas can be hard. I pray things are easier there now. Thanks in advance for any advice. Best regards!

Unknown said...

Hi Empress. Firstly if you are not Indonesian and do not understand the laws here, buying land and then building a house will cost you money. You will need to get some very good legal advice from someone.
If you wish to work as a teacher teaching Adults, then try the Universities or Wall Street and see what they opportunities they have.

You need to research Indonesia and the options that there are before moving here lock stock and barrel.

Hi Luke,

thanks so much - the effort you put into this list is extremely useful for people to try and assess the real cost of living in Jakarta.
By chance do you know anyone living in a serviced apartment complex? maybe something moderately upmarket (vicinity of golden triangle?) that an employer might provide for an employee on 12month posting.
how much do you think per month.

Cheers,

Unknown said...

Hi Anonymous. I would imagine from 6 million a month upwards, depending on size, location etc.

Anonymous said...

Thanks very much Luke. I was expecting something in the order of USD 2000 per month for two bedroom, furnished and serviced complex with facilities so maybe we are thinking different things.

any chance you will be updating your cost of living list? its a great tool.
have you thought about inputting your info into a site like http://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/comparison/birmingham/jakarta?

Cheers, David (prospective Jakarta resident)

Hello, I am from Belgium. I think there is a little problem with your conversion table. For example on the first line the bananas are 1 dollar 34 cents and 1 euro 39 cents. That's impossible because I get for one euro, 1 dollar 30 cents. So how can it be less in dollars than in euros ?
If the price in dollars is correct, it should be about 1 euro.

@ Steemans. This is a guide only completed last year and at the time the calculations were correct as I had checked them agianst xe.com and google currency. Clearly over a year prices change as do conversion rates.

Hey Luke- This assesment looks great. I will be in Djakarta on company provided accomodation and my per month allowance will be 1 million around..you think I can stay in a moderately luxurious manner and still save some money when I go back to my country? Please let me know.

Unknown said...

Hi Paul, 1 million a month? are you sure as that wont get you anywhere as an expat.

Hello

It is about nine years ago that one dollar was more then one euro. The lowest rate in the last five years was about one dollar 21 cents for one euro. Where as in your calculation one dollar is more worth then one euro.

see this link of a belgian economical website : http://grafieken.tijd.be/190143785
If it doesn't show a period of five years select the button 5J at the bottom right
